JAWS

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8

When to expect an attack…

  1. Attacks will often come when we are alone.

  1. Attacks will often come when we are pursuing God’s will.

How to win over temptation…

  1. Recognize your vulnerability

So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! 1 Corinthians 10:12

  1. Run (don’t chum) from temptation

The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure. 1 Corinthians 10:13 (NLT)

  1. Resist the devil

So let God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him scamper. James 4:7 (MSG)

  1. _Root your life in Christ

My counsel for you is simple and straightforward: Just go ahead with what you’ve been given. You received Christ Jesus, the Master; now live him. You’re deeply rooted in him. You’re well-constructed upon him. You know your way around the faith. Now do what you’ve been taught. School’s out; quit studying the subject and start living it! Everything of God gets expressed in him, so you can see and hear him clearly. You don’t need a telescope, a microscope, or a horoscope to realize the fullness of Christ, and the emptiness of the universe without him. Colossians 2 6-7, 9 (MSG)

Baggage – Addiction

I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified.

1 Corinthians 9:27 (New Living Translation)

What has mastered you? ________________________________________

For you are a slave to whatever controls you. 2 Peter 2:19 (NLT)

You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you. And even though “I am allowed to do anything,” I must not become a slave to anything.

1 Corinthians 6:12 (NLT)

Beating an addiction…

  1. Bring it to God

Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. Romans 6:13

  1. Bring it to others

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. James 5:16

  • Pray for me
  • Help me when I fall
  • Hold me accountable

  1. Bring it down

That means you must not give sin a vote in the way you conduct your lives. Don’t give it the time of day. Don’t even run little errands that are connected with that old way of life. Throw yourselves wholeheartedly and full-time—remember, you’ve been raised from the dead!—into God’s way of doing things. Sin can’t tell you how to live. After all, you’re not living under that old tyranny any longer. You’re living in the freedom of God. Romans 6:12-14 (MSG)
