Become an Awesome Encourager

Those who are lifting the world upward and onward are those who encourage more than criticize. – Elizabeth Harrison

Try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud. -Maya Angelou

If you want your children to improve, let them overhear the nice things you say about them to others. – Haim Ginott

If you want to be a great encourager, you have to answer these questions…

Is encouragement regularly part of my conversations and actions?

So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NLT)

Is there someone I know who needs encouragement?

Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. 14 And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone. 1 Thessalonians 5:12-14 (NIV)

Am I prepared to unleash the power of encouragement?

Look for the best in each other, and always do your best to bring it out. Be cheerful no matter what; pray all the time; thank God no matter what happens. This is the way God wants you who belong to Christ Jesus to live. 1 Thessalonians 5:15-18 (The Message)

CHALLENGE:

Encourage one another daily. Hebrews 3:13

Bringing Out the Best in Others

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another — and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:24-25

Three key principles for bringing out the best in others…

  1.  Accept them for who they are.

Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it. Proverbs 22:6

  1. Place your trust in them.

Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own? Luke 16:10-12

Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” John 20:21

  1. Expect great things from them.

God hasn’t invited us into a disorderly, unkempt life but into something holy and beautiful—as beautiful on the inside as the outside. 1 Thessalonians 4:7 (The Message)

The Power of Encouragement

The difference “a word” makes

A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver. Proverbs 25: 11

The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked. Proverbs 10: 11

The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life, but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit. Proverbs 15: 4

Four ways to encourage others…

  1. Give a BLESSING_

  1. Express your APPRECIATION

  1. Verbalize your CONFIDENCE in them

  1. Affirm the IMPACT their life has had

Two Reminders…

  • We underestimate the POWER of our words
  • We underestimate how deeply those around us ARE HURTING
