I AM the Resurrection

What Jesus says about himself:

I am God (John 6:35)                                           I am the moral compass (John 8:12)

I am all inclusive (John 10:7)                           I am protective (John 10:11)

I am the access point (John 14:6)                    I am the source (John 15:1)

Here is what Jesus is saying when he says I Am the Resurrection…

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” John 11:25-26

So what does that mean for us today, right now, at this moment?

  1. Life is available even if you don’t fully understand

“Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.” John 11:21

  1.  Death dies when LIFE walks into the room.

When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. John 11:33, 38

  1. You are alive even if you feel dead inside

Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. “Take away the stone,” he said. John 11:38-39

Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”  But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. Mark 16:2-4

I Am the Way, the Truth and the Life

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6

What Jesus is saying about himself?

First: I provide ACCESS to God

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Romans 5:1-2

Second: I provide KNOWLEDGE of God

Everything of God gets expressed in him, so you can see and hear him clearly. You don’t need a telescope, a microscope, or a horoscope to realize the fullness of Christ, and the emptiness of the universe without him. When you come to him, that fullness comes together for you, too. His power extends over everything. Colossians 2:9-10 (The Message)

Third: I provide RELATIONSHIP with God

This is good, and pleases God our Saviour, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus… 1 Timothy 2:4-5

So what does this mean for us?

We don’t know all the METHODS Jesus uses to bring people to God, but we know he is the ONLY WAY.

That, however, is not the way of life you learned when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Ephesians 4:20-24

I am the Gate & Good Shepherd

Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. John 10:7, 11

What does this say about Jesus?

 1. I have authority

 2. I am protective

 3. I am inclusive

Now what does that mean for you and me?

First: _Abundant life is possible

When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.” Genesis 28:16-17

Second: Death is defeated

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. John 10:27-28

Third: We belong to a community

They answered, “You were born and brought up in sin—and you are trying to teach us?” And they expelled him from the synagogue. John 9:34 (GNT)

Fourth: We are intimately known by God

Your old life is dead. Your new life, which is your real life—even though invisible to spectators—is with Christ in God. He is your life. When Christ (your real life, remember) shows up again on this earth, you’ll show up, too—the real you, the glorious you. Colossians 3:3-4 (The Message)

I Am the Light of the World

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”  John 8:12

What does this say about who Jesus is?

  1. I am the MORAL COMPASS

See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you. Isaiah 60:2

  1. I am ORIGINAL

Everything was created through him; nothing—not one thing! came into being without him. What came into existence was Life, and the Life was Light to live by. The Life-Light blazed out of the darkness; the darkness couldn’t put it out. John 1:3-5 (The Message)

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. John 1:9-13

“I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.” John 12:46

He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1:13-14

I AM the Bread of Life

Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” John 6:35

What does this tell us about who Jesus is?

Jesus is saying that he is GOD.

Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” God said to Moses, “I Am who I Am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I Am has sent me to you.’” Exodus 3:13-14

  • ego = I AM
  • eimi = I AM

NOTE: God’s authority determines our identity

Jesus is saying: “I am God and God is like _____________________
