Haunted House

Haunted houses are always portrayed as scary, run-down buildings, but we want the Holy Ghost to haunt our church.

 

So how do we know if the Holy Spirit is at work in a church?

 

  1. There is a visible expression of peace

 

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Acts 2:42

 

Christ brought us together through his death on the cross. The Cross got us to embrace, and that was the end of the hostility. Christ came and preached peace to you outsiders and peace to us insiders. He treated us as equals, and so made us equals. Through him we both share the same Spirit and have equal access to the Father. Ephesians 2:16-18 (The Message)

 

  1. There is evidence of shared life

 

All the believers were together and had everything in common. Acts 2:44

 

Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important. Galatians 2:2-3 (NLT)

 

  1. There is a high level of participation in the community

 

They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. Acts 2:45-47

 

We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

Romans 12:6-8

 

  1. There is evidence of growth

 

And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. Acts 2:47

Show Yourself!

The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. Romans 8:11 (NLT)

 

Dunamis: a force; a miraculous power; the EXPLOSIVE power of God

 

The Holy Spirit displays his power in four ways…

 

 

  1. Power to share Christ boldly.

 

My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power. 1 Corinthians 2:4-5

 

  1. Power when you are weak.

 

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. Romans 8:26

 

 

 

  1. Power to have hope in a hopeless world.

 

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13

 

 

  1. Power to experience all the fullness of God.

 

I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Ephesians 3:16-19

What Was That!

Why is it that so many people today are living a Spirit-less life? There are many reasons, but we want to just look at two briefly.

 

Reason#1: Some people aren’t even aware of the Holy Spirit.

 

Now, it happened that while Apollos was away in Corinth, Paul made his way down through the mountains, came to Ephesus, and happened on some disciples there. The first thing he said was, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed? Did you take God into your mind only, or did you also embrace him with your heart? Did he get inside you?” “We’ve never even heard of that—a Holy Spirit? God within us?”  Acts 19:1-3 (MSG)

 

Reason #2: Some people are simply resisting the Holy Spirit.

 

And you continue, so bullheaded! Calluses on your hearts, flaps on your ears! Deliberately ignoring the Holy Spirit, you’re just like your ancestors. Acts 7:51 (MSG)

 

 

How we know when the Holy Spirit is near…

 

 

  1. Holy Spirit will comfort you.

 

And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), to be with you forever— John 14:16 (Amplified Bible)

 

  1. Holy Spirit will guide you.

 

But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. John 16:13

 

  1. Holy Spirit will convict you

 

And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment. John 16:8 (NLT)
